Yeah, those rangers were just getting a head start on their new-found freedoms under the NDAA act.

here's a hint, question the ranger's. There just as afraid as you are, especially if you sound like you know what your talking about. The only difference is LEO is trained a little better to use the bluff. If you feel you're being harassed, get their info and ask to speak to their shift captain. If they want to search, thats cool, but make it clear that they will be held accountable to show reasonable cause for search and take pictures of any damaged personal goods or "hardship" caused by the search. Of course, none of this helps if you got a bag of dope, but i be damned if i let one talk to me in any manner that i feel belittleing while im obeying the law, in the woods.
Chances are, if these LEO's are consistently in the wrong, it needs to be brought to there higher and they probably are already aware and looking for one more incident to put them on the street. Everybody works for sombody.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/law/rules.shtml

now, it is hard for me to conceive of the DBNF as 'a public space' if you need a pass to be there overnight?
[edit #1]
From http://definitions.uslegal.com/p/public-place
"A public place is generally an indoor or outdoor area, whether privately or publicly owned, to which the public have access by right or by invitation, expressed or implied, whether by payment of money or not, but not a place when used exclusively by one or more individuals for a private gathering or other personal purpose."

yeah, so that sucks, you're paying to get fucked with.
[edit#2]
but it would be pretty funny to walk up to a girl scout campfire and participate in the activities as if in contravention of the 'not a place used exclusively by one or more ....blah blah..' as if duration of time had no effect on meaning. now, there's a spot of hope, where is the rule for being a pain in the ass?
training is for people who care, i have a job.

Let me share one of many bad deals with these cops.
1999 just set camp up with my wife.. Chopped some dead would, small fire.. Very clean camp not far from rockbridge.. more than 600 ft from trail and creek... Bout 6 more camps around, most on the trail or by the water.. About 11 pm I see head lights running into my camp.. cops!! They said they had a report of gun fire and needed to search.. I told them I have no guns.. he asked to search me I said I guess so.. When he asked to search my wife it all when bad.. I knew he did not have the rite to touch her. Without cause . He will need a female cop.. he said fine I need to search your tent . I said why.. Because I can he said.. Now I know I should have just been cool about it, but this was some bullshit.. well he found a pint of JD unopened in my pack... He said enough for me. Cuff em jonny...I was like what the hell!!!! He said this is a dry co. Boy your going to jail... I asked for what he said .. pubic intoxication ... I was pissed!! Confused and could not understand what was going on... I tryed to be nice and tell him we have not been drinking.. give me a test. He said no test needed in a dry co... What do you say to a dumb ass dick head with a gun and a badge!!! Man I was so pissed I beat those cops to their car by 15min. In handcuffs behind my back with no light... While my wife lead them out the long way... Because they could not find the paved trail out.. He tryed to get me fro running away... I said I'm here your just slow... Well they booked us, put us in cell... 3am kicked us out, said we could go. Weird but I'm not going to bitch about this one.. 2 weeks later at court I told the prosecutor that I thought it was an illegal search and seizer.. He almost agreed, unfilled he said my fine was 125 bucks.. Why would I spend a fortune on such a small fine. I said because it was not rite what happend.. he said fine get an attorney for a trial.. in the end I just paid the 125bucks... FUBAR!!!!!!!!

Well, if you google the definition of "Dry County" you will find http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_county . It clearly defines a dry county as a county in the Uninted States where the purchase of alcohol is illegal. It says nothing about consumption or posession of alcohol. I beleive the cops are bluffing when they say they can take you to jail over it. I can not believe they took you to jail for having an unopened bottle in your bag. Just goes to show you how messed up those cops are around the gorge. I agree that we need them, but come on. That is a clear abuse of power.
