Great point. That's the way I feel too. If you can't figure it out without a tic mark, maybe you should get on another route and practice your moves a bit.
Everytime anyone has yelled beta at me, I can figure it out from the words. Don't need a visual too.

actually, you already have a "visual" with all the chalk on the routes at the Red....that is hardly "figuring it out on your own"..i guess you just don't want "more" help than what is already being offered by the first 1,000 people on the route.

Although on some routes there are more bogus holds chalked up than legit ones, it still has narrowed the choices for you to a manageable number.

nothing wrong with tick marks, except being an eyesore. They do not legitimize or detract from your ascent.

How many of us have asked "is that next clipping hold good"? isn't that a verbal tick mark?

Aren't ther requirements at some crags that chalk must be removed(i.e. Hueco Tanks) or are these usually agreements between climbers and landowners?

Why not invent rock colored chalk?

Ditto on pigsteak's post. How many of you have climbed at other areas other than the Red. I have been to many different area in the US and not many are as overhanging as the Red. So most of the time you don't have all the chalk to follow up a route. It is really hard to find a pure on-sight at the Red, in my opinion, all the chalk makes onsights easier...esp when you learn to 'read' the chalk. But still I LOVE it :D

Oh, shoot, you're right, Sprag, his brush IS wire. I have been contributing to the destruction of the Red. Dammit! :x I will have to buy my own brush to clean, then.

The product is called Rock Chalk.
