Why? What's so fucked up about it? If more people sought advice and knowledge BEFORE buying firearms, then there would be less accidents. Anyone who is considering owning a gun should be asking these questions

Guns are dangerous, and an uneducated gun owner is a scary thing.

If you have a problem with guns in general, think of it like a total gumby buying a trad rack and heading to El Cap. A little knowledge goes a long way.
i should have clarified..

i was just sayin' that there's some weird shit in here. that's all..... nobody should be eagerly awaiting that 'home invasion fight to the death' moment... seems there's a fine line between anticipating and fantasizing... knowledgeable or not, there are certainly wrong reasons to have a gun.

i dont know... i'd rather have someone creep in and steal my laptop than blast them, get their blood all over my stuff, watch them bleed out, and live the rest of my life knowing that some crackhead with a shitty life died on my kitchen floor.

What if the crackhead with a shitty life was coming at you with a big knife? His blood on your kitchen floor might be the least of your worries. As for me, I'd have to think quick because my substantial gun collection is tucked well away in a big fucking safe in the basement, completely out of reach.

heh. despite being a military certified range coach and having a "zombie plan" i don't actually own a gun. never had enough money (that i didn't want to spend on a climbing trip or music gear) to purchase one.

that said, when i do get one i'd never opt to take someone's life to save my material wealth. really i just want one (or three) so when the right-wingers come to lynch me and my mostly pacifist socialist brethren i can go out like Butch and Sundance.

i'm not playing Modern Warfare II for fun people. it's training.

Meh, someone breaks into your house, they forfeit their life. Sucks for them, but they put themselves in a bad place. x10 if they attack threaten anyone you care about. Violence sucks, but, regardless of what the bleeding heart types believe, it is effective and just when applied appropriately.

DMW, double tap is expired, two the body, one to the head is tired, and shoot til the threat is removed is wired.*

It is always amazing/distressing how wrong common knowledge can be, but they could do a full seasons worth of myth busters on guns and shooting people.

Thanks much for the info, had a pretty good idea going in, and the AR v. AK has probably spawned more internet flame wars then sport v. trad. I have a buddy who really knows his shit, and a few more fiends that also have great advice. Since it is mostly for fun shooting, with protection as a secondary thought, the ar is the way to go for me. If I was buying something for defense I would probably go with AR-10 / HK91 in .308, but way to pricey to just shoot for fun.

*wonder if anyone understands this?

My dream gun is a Christiansen arms .338 Lapua in a Model 700 Remington Alaskan Titanium. The optics by Zeis with a Lieca range finder. It's about a $10k package. They tell me they will start building it with $500 down.

Now that would serve up some stout recoil. As for the AR/AK thing, I don't have much interest in military style firearms. I think it's mostly because semi-autos, by their nature, don't promote the kind of deliberate target shooting I prefer. My tastes run more toward classic bolt action and single shot sporting rifles. I have the calibers pretty well covered from 17 to 416... 12 bore if you count the rifled slug gun. However, from mouse gun to elephant rifle, nothing is as much fun to shoot as my Anschutz, in 22 rimfire. If you don't have a supremely accurate 22, treat yourself to one someday. In normal times it costs 2cents to pull the trigger on one of the world's best production rifles. In today's market where panic buying has pushed ammunition prices sky high, it costs closer to a nickle for every shot.

If you can't justify an Anschutz, look at a CZ, great gun for less $.

a semi auto .22 pistol or rifle is super fun to shoot, accurate, and would hurt like hell at close range. besides, i dare you to try and shoot 10 dollars worth of ammo in a day before you get bored.

good point, the .22 is the cheapest gun on earth to shoot, and they are fun! Ruger makes a really awesome 10 round double action revolver I have always wanted. It is the only 10 round revolver I have ever seen, i suppose because the ammunition is so much smaller.

Does anyone have a personalized gun lock? The kind that will only let the owners fire? I have seen one where you wear a ring and that unlocks the gun.

I agree with this, but alot of .22 semi autos can be very ammo picky and and unreliable. Even high quality .22LR ammo is still very very cheap.
