I totally agree, SCIN. It's lame enough to offer candy as a prize to the winner of first place women's advanced, and it's only made worse by the way in which Julie was [mis]lead to make the decision. Here's what I gleaned from the website:

Kris, at least they used a picture of you after switching your prize at the last minute. That counts as a prize, right? I bet your album sales skyrocketed after they put that photo up.

This place and the comp sound super lame. Sorry you had to experience that, Julie. They couldn't have picked a nicer person to screw over if they'd tried.

I am nicer. They could have screwed me over. But I like Fruit Roll Ups, and I don't boulder, so I might have been happy. Doesn't Julie's boyfirens get sponsored crap or something. I heard he knows Sharma....

here's what I wrote...

Hi,
My name is Kevin Downs and am a longtime climber in the Red River Gorge and a prolific user of redriverclimbing. com. There is a thread there that has had a lot of interest where the first place women's winner in your recent bouldering competition was duped into accepting a booby prize while the first place men's received a crash pad. I really think this is unfair. I have been involved in bouldering competitions at my local gym and have helped host them for the ABS and while prizes are expensive and resources are limited, they should be equal for both men and women climbers. While no one has asked me to write this, I feel i should on behalf of Julie and on behalf of future climbers in your competitions. This decision should be made more fair to her. If you look up the thread at redriverclimbing.com you will see that your organization is becoming notorious for this discriminate decision in awarding prizes. Please make this right for Julie and for your academic institution - it is the right thing to do.

Thanks,
Kevin Downs

ha!

i really appreciate everyone's nice words (and tania, you are sweet-you give me waayyyy too much credit lol). and no, i don't need no man to get me gear through his sponsorships ;) (good thing i'm not banking on that, huh allah?? :) )

just to be clear, there WERE two crash pads out there. andrew took one, and then i think the women's intermediate winner got the next one (since she would have been next in line to choose). there were two tables-you chose a "big" prize and a "little" prize (obviously, the joke prize was on the big side).

i was thinking about it today, though; basically, it was kinda silly to have one crap prize on the good side, particularly since it wasn't really a table of gag prizes or anything. if i had not taken it, someone else would have been screwed in the same way. thus, maybe it's better i got it, because i'm not really at a shortage of gear right now...

anywho, i don't want to undermine the fun of the event. if you have never been to the adventure summit, it's pretty cool; i actually had no idea that there would be vendors, kayaking, biking, etc. as well as climbing. from what i've heard from other previous competitors, i wouldn't necessarily bank on the prizes, but if you just want to drive, pay an entry fee and climb (no bitterness intended, for reals), then it's lots of fun.

by the way, KD, did you really send that? who did you send it to? just curious...

I sent it to the email in Yas' post above. Amy Anslinger at (937) 775-5821 or amy.anslinger@wright.edu It really pisses me off that this happened and it should be corrected. i don't know if it will help but I hope it will.

I half expected to hear about the time you shared a bathroom with the event coordinator.
