i find the most difficult group/grade is the hard 5.11/easy 5.12 grade. most of the hard-core badasses don't warm up on the same stuff i do. i clash with the mid-grades, because those routes are somewhere between project and warm-up, depending on who you talk to. i'd take a hard-core asshole over a projecting newbie any day. i can often get those people to brush key holds for me (and, let's face it-they're off the climb after one go, as opposed to the entire day).
