Don't worry, this thread's still a good distance from the top 4.

Oh man, that's classic quotable material right there.

Are you measuring # of pages or # of posts?

(By the way - would you be able to find the longest single post in # of characters? Not that I have any personal interest  )

Let me try this as a response to Piggie's "if we're just 'stuff' why bother doing good?" question:

Piggie - I think that you experience pain and joy just like I do, regardless of the mechanism ('soul' vs. mere electrical impulses). So, if I'm mean to you, I feel bad (could be internalized childhood punishment - but does it really matter?) If I'm nice to you, I feel good. Plus, it seems that pretty much if we all try to follow the Golden Rule (a.k.a. "do unto others...") that we all benefit.

Sure, that's pretty self-serving, but then so is the fear-of-hell desire-for-heaven 'moral' system.

Those options don't look good.

so finally someone is stepping to the plate...

shamis, are you saying that any of those versions (religion, spirituality, and faith) are a load of BS?

that was my entire point in this thread. the thread started out by maintaining that faith, religion, and spirituality were crap becasue they could not be scientifically verified.

To stay consistent, I was only asking the naysayers to step up to the plate and be equal opportunity haters. If mainstream chirstianity is BS, then you have to say so is Islam, Buddhism, liberal christianity like JB's, etheral spirituality like charlie's, and yoga good vibes like my wife's, etc..

it's tough boys, but let's be honest in our elitism.

thank you shamis.

Pretty much.

Nothing wrong with a philosophy for living, or meditation, or yoga, but the rest of it is mostly junk.

I've got no problems with religions when they don't affect me, but most of them do affect me. Islam and christianity, both preach enough hatred to make me think the world would be better off without them.

And the thought processes that they teach are dangerous. Between fundamentalist muslims, and fundamentalist christians we've got millions and millions of completely irrational people who do not wait to gather facts before making conclusions because they've been taught to believe what they're book or their leader has told them, and that believing without questioning is a virtue...
