Is that really an issue? One of the things that sank in for me last weekend was how much business Mark was doing at the BBQ from non-climbers. The BBQ was busy, and almost everyone there were non-climbers (waddling, old 'bikers', scouts, etc.) Out of 40-50 customers, maybe 6-8 looked like climbers.J-Rock wrote:I'll still eat there, however I've also heard from several climbers that they will no longer be going there if the cliff is closed... Climbers rarely do the via ferrata, they rarely stay in the cabins. Climbers simply are not a meaningful part of Mark's bottom line.

Yes, that is an issue. I don't think it bothers Mark but it bothers his customers. How would you like to rent a rustic cabin at a bed and breakfast and be surrounded by that? Maybe true but Mark loves the climbers. He gives us everything we ask for, every time we ask. He's been more than generous for the RRGCC events and forgiving when things got screwed up. He helps us out all the time (quite a few times I've gotten free dinner for trail work) and also employs a few of the dirtbags we know and love. The thing is he's got enough work to do at the BBQ and when giving us the opportunity to climb interferes with his business or hits him with responsibilities he doesn't need then you can see why things could become problematic.
I hope things are improving, but we must remain vigilant. He's one of the best friends we've got.

Maybee we can chalk this one up to Freaky Friday but I spoke to Mark & Kathy today and they are very happy with the response of the climbing community to their concerns. As long as climbers continue to respect their rules, climbing at Torrent will remain open.

Thanks for checking Captain. It's great news to hear that athey are happy with the response from climbers and to know that our efforts have not been for naught.
