Am I wearing a red dress? :D
I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

I see a trend here. Belittling Christians appears to be accepted here as a natural expression of "logic and reason," whereas defending Christianity is viewed as an attempt to shove a set of childish, superstitious beliefs down other peoples' throats.

I see dead people.... and some pretty funny stuff too.

christian witnessing gone amok.

pontificating to the point of damnation , or at least making your god unhappy.

supposing to know your god's will, and in effect placing limits on him.

the lameness , of the supposed "hipness" of railing against the notion of political correctness. When it truly means only to excuse hatred and bigotry.

strange algebra with god , logic , and science.

shouldn't any reference to what your god thinks be prefaced with something like ; " the way I understand it...", " in my oppinion..", or " I think..."?

how often does anyone ask forgiveness for the sins of there perticular flavor of faith and the carnage done in it's name? are they as forgiving when others do the same? or does that all boil down to that was them , this is me.

how could witnessing work without humility and love?

it's assinine to believe morality cannot exist without religion.

as far as creationism's role in science, you will survive. it just takes awhile for the facts to sink in. the world has rounded and become far less significant. difficult and scary disease is no longer the manifestation of demons ( oh wait, you haven't exactly signed on to that one yet). Those big bones dug up in the 18th century are obviously" the beasts of the field".

this is a very cynical view of all things religious. It's what you have asked for .
what leads me to believe there might be something to it is that if it is the word of god, it suffers with every translation and every time we open our mouth.

ZSpider, re-read my post. I never assigned these actions to Christians. I was talking about everyone involved in these debates. Shoving anti-[insert religious affilian here] or pro-[ditto] views down other people's throats disgusts me. On the other hand, I totally dig open minded discussions about religion. Trouble is, most people are not open-minded about this subject.

I am an atheist (of sorts), yet have mad respect for Christians and Muslims and Jews and other people of faith who are secure in their beliefs enough not to be threatened by mine. I have spent many nights in my life discussing and studying religion with people from many walks of life. I enjoy it. But these nasty debates of angry absolutes serve no purpose whatsoever.

/me yawns

GULLIVER - excellent post. Thank you.

So, did jesus go to every planet in the universe that has at any time produced a sentient populace in the last 12 billion years? Will jesus go to any planets that produce sentient life in the remaining 100 billion years the universe as we know has existence? For those who don't know, the universe is doomed to become a very cold and dark place in the future, unless of course the second coming applies to the entire universe and not just this one little planet. Did/will jesus visit any sentient people in parallel universes which quantum physics quite possible allow? If jesus was a real person, what was his DNA like? Was his DNA that of a clone? Did he have paternal DNA? How was his suffering on the cross, considering his suffering was only for a limited time due to the easing of his pain by god, that big of a deal? What REAL christian, or ANY person of conscience wouldn't allow themselves to be crucified if it saved EVERY FREAKING PERSON EVER BORN, EVER!! Good god, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of humans have been tortured FAR FAR WORSE by those who believe in a god, a christian god, or nothing at all. What's worse, being beaten and then crucified, or brutally tortured for months and years??? Logically, it makes no damn sense. If god came to me and said I could save everyone on earth, my mom, my wife, my family, everyone, by going through what jesus did, I would do it. Who wouldn't? Therefore, whats the big deal??? Many many people have sacrificed themselves to only save one other life, let alone OVER 12 BILLION. Sorry, but looked at that way, its not that big a deal at all. Now, the whole bible quoting crap. Which parts are legitimate and which parts are not? Which translation of which version is the real word? What about the dead sea scrolls? What about all of the "books" of the bible that man decided to not include in the "one bible?" Now, once you pick a book, what parts are the voice of god or jesus and what parts are made up by man. Now, the parts you think are god and jesus, what of those words have actually made it to you UNCHANGED by the hundreds of hand made copies which were created before the printing press? The odds don't look good do they? Now, of what's left, which of those do you take LITERALLY and which are allegories you don't have to FOLLOW WORD FOR WORD? Don't even get me started on gays, bisexuals, abortion, euthanasia, and any other decisive point which none of the world's religions can agree on. Ok, I made up for being at work all day. I'm going climbing tomorrow. I truly love any and all who seek knowledge above that which they already posess and who don't seek spiritual enlightenment at the cost of others. I encourage EVERYONE to go read a scholarly article written by the "enemy." That means a religious or scientific piece in a peer reviewed journal, not a pamphlet copied at kinkos.

If those are real, our educational system is in real distress.
