Things to check on your rope:
Age has already been covered.
Is it smooth or fuzzy? The more fuzzy it is, the thinner the sheath is. Retire before you wear through the sheath.
Can you feel any kinks in the core? I would probably retire a rope immediately if the core was kinked anywhere.
Is it still stretchy? It should stretch about 10%. When it loses stretchiness, retire.
