The main Apple store in Chicago has people out the front and down the block as of about 11:00 am today...

I really wanted to not like/care about the iPhone. Then I watched the 20min. intro video... Damn. It really is 90% of what I want a phone/iPod/PDA/spork to be. Also, I found out that I could upgrade my current service to work with it for an extra $20/mo. Not nearly as bad as I was expecting....

As with any 1.0 hardware, I'm not going to bite. Also, it sounds like Cingular/AT&T (actually the old SBC = #1 worst customer service!) is improving their EDGE data system from really crappy to, uh, sorta crappy. If the data speeds improve that would make the thing more appealing. Maybe if rev2 comes out in early '08 with some improvements, I'll 'trade in' my iPod for one...

(Does anyone know if you get EDGE service around the Red? One way to tell is if your Blackberry will send/receive e-mail...)

I was able to get edge service in the Southern Region, on Cingular/AT&T. I pay $19.99 for their "MediaMax 200" which is unlimited web surfing and 200 text messages per month. It's a workaround to their PDA plan which is outrageously expensive. I hope they don't make me switch.

I also get a 15% service discount on that and my voice plan through my company. 8)

As far as an sturdy Mp3 player goes, consider checking out a Nano. Before I bought mine two years ago I found a demo online where some guys beat the hell out of it by throwing it out of a car window and running it over with a car, etc. It convinced me that using it for running and/or biking would be fine. It has now held up for these activities and several more international trips. It has gotten wet and still works fine, though I don't think I would push my luck with a $200 toy.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

Go Mac!

my children both have Nanos. From the way my daughter treats hers, I can attest to their durability.

Too bad about her Razr and the little white dot turning red, though... :x

you suck!

I think the visual voice mail alone would justify at least $199 of the price tag.

On Friday evening, I had to go to the mall for, er, totally unrelated reasons... But, hey, what a coincedence! There's an Apple store there! It was about 7:30pm, so an hour and a half after the release. I figured that there would still be a line out the door selling the phones. Nope. At that time, you could just walk right up to a counter and they'd gladly sell you a phone or two off the stack. No line, no waiting. (I heard that a lot of AT&T stores sold out though.)

I did elbow my way through the scrum to fondle one of the demo units. Yes, it's amazing.

I'm not ready to buy one, but I have to assume that my next phone will be an iPhone!

Let me tell you about an amazing phone.

-Dropped 80 feet twice from the top of climbs, don't ask why I had my phone with me. Still operates perfectly, and did not break, just minor scratches
-Battery lasts like the day I got it free which was at least 4 years ago, but it could have been longer.
-Battery lasts for a week before dieing even with plenty of talk time, longer with little talk time.
-Seems to be resisten to water, I have accidentally tested this several times
-Countless drops on hard floors, stepped on, hit with things, even do it on purpose to show people the durability
-Operates like the day I got it even after all of this and when you flip it open it looks brand new.

See if you Iphone, Blackberry, Blackjack, Razor, or any other fancy phone can do that.

Did I say it makes phone calls.
