argh. Being a Chicagoan, I have to say that Styx and Chicago (oh, the shame!) have dug a deeper hole than Smashing Pumpkins/Zawn (I can't tell them apart) could fill in.Horatio Felacio wrote:jeff, all you need is this little band you might have heard of called stix. that's right, nothing like a little mr. roboto to get you psyched.

secret, secret. he's got a secret....
If you're looking for something more obscure to ressurect Chicago's tarnished musical reputation, check out Poi Dog Pondering. Album-wise, I think that "Volo Volo" is their early peak (even if they hadn't yet moved to Chi town) It has a fair amount of Hawaiian infulence as you can guess from their name. After they came here and discovered Chicago House, "Electrique Plummagram" is my favorite. (Who knew you could love to dance to a song about cancer treatment?) They're really a live band (packing up to 30 people on stage) but the albums are great too.
While I'm on the Chicago-tip, check out the J Davis Trio for some sophisticated (and funny) jazz/hip hop. For rap, I'll get old school and point out the Jungle Brothers' "Done by the Forces of Nature" (JBs commin' through!) Simultaneous Afrocentric enlightmenment and party jams! What more could you want!? For new stuff, check out The Streets' disc "Original Pirate Material" They're from Birmingham, UK but keep it local, rather than trying to sound like US hip hop.
Just to throw in something completely different, I love the album "Dancing with the Enemy, Volume 2" It's Cuban dance music from the 60's and 70's. Amazing!
