Do you really think a comment with the username "Pissoff2009" next to it will be any more credible than "Someone"? There is no difference. Good luck getting Google to reveal the IP address used to register the pissoff2009@gmail.com address. This is the internet guys. It is built on anonymity. Verisign doesn't check your credentials before grabbing an email address at Google. We don't require digital signatures for each post. You don't know who is who on here although sometimes you may think you do.

but if you did require they login, at least there would be a name to it other than someone.
Okay, would it make you feel better if we had a random username generator that placed names like "Sickboy07" or "Bob Goodfield" next to the anonymous comments? I think I just may code that up as a social experiment. I'll have an automated bot log on every once in awhile as the user too and make posts about what a great weekend they had climbing at the Red or how they got a cam stuck somewhere, etc. etc.
Would that make people feel better?

at least they'd have to go to that extra work, maybe it would cut back on the jackassery a skosh. ultimately you're right, and it isn't that hard to live with.

That's exactly what I'm looking for, thanks. I knew we could convince you.
caribe, I've cleaned up particularly offensive comments (such as the one to which you were referring) before. Ray's right, though - it's a losing battle, and there have been plenty of useful anonymous comments.

One thing we could have is a "Flag comment" button that would email a mod to see if it deserves being taken down. People would abuse that too, but at least we could clean up some of the crap people post, like the one mentioned above.
