I use a figure eight and carry a marlinspike.
No chalkbag since 1995.

There's no way in hell I can untie a figure 8 after loading it with my weight. I use a double bowline with Yosemite finish.
Sarcasm is a tool the weak use to avoid confrontation. People with any balls just outright lie.

How much do you weigh? I always here people saying the same thing. I weigh 200 pounds and very rarely have problems with the figure 8. I use a figure 8 with a double fisherman backup.

I'm about 210. I can untie it when top roping, but a lead fall locks that thing up so tight I need to spend 10 minutes trying to get it out. No thanks, I'll tie and easier knot.

Shouldn't it read "Double Figure 8"?

What about a "double figure 8" knot? Is that not a choice? I don't think I could trust a single figure 8 knot...

Although I did do that once at Seneca years ago. I realized 60 feet into the pitch that I didn't double back the figure 8 knot. Fortunately I caught it as the rope started to fall away toward the talus.

I use a figure 8 with a fishermans finish knot. I have used the bowline, but everyone I climb with uses the figure 8 so for ease of checking your partners harness/knot etc at a distance, I stick to the 8 because it is easily recognizable. Lots of people who I climb with don't know how to either a. tie the double bowline, or b. recognize it as tied correctly at a glance.

I've fallen on my figure 8 many times and never have a problem untieing it. if you tie it neatly with all the lines laid flat it should 'break' open rather easily. if you are sloppy and cris-crossing the rope when tieing it, it will be harder to undo.

Some Dayton folks showed me a cool way to tie an 8 so that it unties easily. I recall that they loop the tail through the harness twice before finishing the knot.
I still use the bowline though.
