Glad to hear things are looking better, Tina. Stacia and I are sending some prayers long distance from New York. Hoping for the best. Mike.

Alex is continuing to improve. He is still in a deep coma with a coma score of 8, however as soon as he responds more consistently to commands, his score will be raised. He has opened his eyes a few times, and even flipped off the nurse once when he was annoyed! He has now been off the respirator for 24 hours, though he still has a tracheotomy and is receiving supplemental oxygen. If he has no problems tonight, he will be moved out of the ICU into a private room (as soon as one becomes available).

The doctors did not expect Alex to be doing this well for 3 months, and it's been 10 days. This is all super exciting, and Tina is optimistic. Alex and his family have a tough road ahead of them, though. Nothing is certain at this time. The extent of his damage cannot be determined until he is out of the coma, and then he will begin a long period of rehabilitation. Please keep reaching out to Tina and Jesse. They deeply appreciate the thoughts and prayers, and are grateful for everyone's generosity and friendship. If you want to help but are at a loss to think of what you can do, please get in touch with me and I'll be happy to help you come up with some ideas.

As a side note, Tina just tickled the ivories for us and I heard not only a talented, accomplished musician, but also the soul a woman with the ability to embrace hope and joy. She's amazing. Also, I want to say that Alex's friends kick ass. I've never met a better group of kids. It's been really beautiful to see them pulling together for Alex and his family.

Well, Alex's recovery is going to be a roller coaster. Tina just got a call from the ICU and he has been put back on the respirator. There has been no significant change since we saw him a few hours ago. They believe he was simply tired. His vitals responded positively as soon as he was put back on, and so he is going to be allowed to rest. He will not be moved out of the ICU until he is ready.

Alex is once again off the respirator and we are very hopeful he will stay that way. He developed another round of pneumonia and that is why the use of the respirator but progress is being made. Looks like he may leave the ICU and move into a room as early as Tuesday morning if he responds as well as he has. Keep your thoughts with Alex for a progressive recovery. If you would like to know how to help, contact Sandy.

Family friend,
Tricia

Alex took a turn for the worse last night and it has been a rough night and day for him and his family. He aspirated vomit into his lungs and has been fighting an infection of (previously) unknown origin. This stressed his organs and caused him to become critical again. He was moved into the trauma ICU and had surgery this afternoon in order to find the source of air in his stomach. He made it through surgery okay, thankfully. His feeding tube was found to be leaking into his abdomen. They have relocated the tube, and everyone seems quite relieved now that they understand and have resolved the source of his problems.

Alex will likely have a rough weekend fighting this assault on his system, so please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
