I'm joking about the fact of actually shooting someone, I would never shoot a person unless it was absolutely necessary in self defense.

But as Air Canada said, the people breaking in most likely have guns. So I would most likely have the gun for the benefit of scaring those people, and possibly for protection. Also, I think I said it would be good to have a paintball or bb gun. That way there's no chance for someone to "accidentally" get killed.

A camera would be really good...but it needs to be hidden from the people breaking in or the person taking pictures needs to be hidden very well. There are cameras that are made to be attached to poles or trees outdoors and are camoflauged for deer hunters. I don't think they're that expensive. Maybe we can all chip in and get one or I can see if I know someone that has one and would let me borrow it.

Well, if your just gonna take pictures, someone had to be willing to set thier car up as bait. The only reason i suggested guns was for the same reason sarah said...if they have guns and we dont, ww're fucked! If we had a large group of people with guns and found the thiefs armed too, they wouldnt get in a shoot out with a group that largely outnumbers them in man power and fire power, it would just be to keep the peace. I woulndt intend on firing a single shot.

I am a gun owner, but my motto is that you should never pull out your gun and point it at a person unless you fully intend to shoot them.

I think an organized watch with cameras for gathering evidence would be good to stop/catch the current assholes. However, as evidenced by the fact that several crooks are locked up and new ones jumped in to fill their shoes so quickly, it's not a long term solution. I think several weeks or months of keeping an obvious presence at the problem spots is the only way to end this, but can we climbers organize and commit to such an undertaking? I don't see that happening. It is also only another temporary fix.

A better solution is to alert climbers to the problems and encourage everyone to empty their vehicles of all valuables. The trouble is that crooks may resort to vandalism when their efforts go unrewarded. It sounds like this may already be happening. A shuttle service would be even better. A smart entrepeneur could step in right now and make some money. I'm not sure how much, but there sure is a need.

Someone with a "short bus" would make a killing shuttling to and from Miguels.

people were ARRESSTED...that means they are still awaiting court and they probably got out on bail and are back on the dirt roads of eastern kentucky

I can't think of anyone with a van/truck large enough to be considered a shuttle. But the idea still beats ambushing with weapons, especially since crooks like these rarely go without a bat or gun.

Which makes me think these guys know nobody's brave enough to kick some ass. Thieves have it nice these days because nobody delivers a good, old-fashioned ass whoopin'.

Protection? Sounds like a job for the Manimal. Anyone with long time experience knows that these thefts are a continuous problem that never go away but may shift due to various counter actions. A friend of mine has a vacation home between Frenchburg & Cave Run Lake. The home was broken into and since he keeps little of value there, it was vandalized. It is only my opinion, but I think that in time the RRGCC will need a full-time caretaker to manage the Murray Preserve.

I know nothing so humiliating than toting a gun to protect yourself, then in a moment of distraction, having it stolen and realizing that you have armed a criminal. If car vandals are toting guns when they committ thier crimes they can be prosecuted under the kentucky "gun crime means extra time statutes." the unlocked car thing or a watchperson seems the most reasonable to me.

FYI, there were 3 cars broken into at Roadside last weekend (May 1 or 2). We met one of the victims this weekend. None of the people reported this to the police because they said they didn't think anything would be done. I don't think this was brought up on the forum, I only recall the recent Motherlode break-ins.

I hope there were no incidents this weekend...

There was a note at Miguels on Saturday afternoon stating that there were breakins at the Motherlode that day.

Unfortunately, there are so many parking places, if the scum rides by and sees activity at one parking lot, they will just ride past and go to the next.

I wonder how many times a vehicle does get broken in to and it's never reported.
