rhunt,
if they can't use a gri gri appropriately on a sport climb, then they are a gumby and have no business climbing with the hardmen and women of the gorge...send em back inside...

did you pick up that trad mentality about belying from the same guy who said "the leader should never fall"?

I prefer to use the Russian Belay. Especially if I don't particularly like the person leading.

Capt'n, aplications of penalty slack along with the a Russian Belay always seem to go hand in hand or not in hand!

I get the feeling that some people trust the dum-dum (english translation for the gri-gri) waaay more than they should. this is similar to that blind trust in bolts, too. neither are foolproof. I'm with Sandy on this one. I'll take a competent belayer with a tuber any time. also, I've seen some very bad habits developed by people using the g-g and was almost dropped to the deck by someone using one.

PS - I can buy a WC Tech Friend and a real belay device for the same price as the g-g. plus, I'm left-handed and that damned thing wasn't made for me.

i'm left handed and i can handle a gri gri just fine, sometimes you need to adjust to the right handed world we live in...

and just because someone uses an atc doesn't mean they are anymore attentive, i have seen plenty of atc users with bad habits...

but really it doesn't matter, just use whatever you and your climber like

by 'real' I mean you can use it as a proper rap device. come to think of it, you can't lead on 2 ropes w/ one, either. you should also bring something in addition to the g-g, so you can RAP off the anchors instead of lowering through them.

the left-handed thing was sarcasm. I have left and right handed rifles for instance, both of which I can operate with equal ease. when I want some strange, I use my right hand, too.
