I think that part of the issue with Gibson's film is that he did get the message that Mel intended. A lot of Christians who would never think of harassing some dolt in a Satan costume are exactly the people who have serious problems with the version of Christianity that Gibson is promoting. You have to keep in mind that Gibson comes from a conservative Catholic background, but has moved into a Fundamentalist offshoot group that rejects a lot of important Catholic teachings. Father Andrew Greeley has a good column on some of these issues:
Country Cinemas' management is in the process of creating new guidelines for preventing people dressed as “evil beings” from gaining entrance to the theatre.
What percentage of the theater's revenues come from people paying to see people dressed as 'evil beings' in movies? And does that mean that when Star Wars VIXC comes out, people can't dress up as Darth Maul, but they can come dressed up as ewoks? (OK, bad example)
Thank you for that perspective, tomdarch. I spoke on an assumption having little time these days to educate myself adequately. At the risk of appearing swayed, I actually have had no desire to see the movie. I somehow think I might feel like a gawker at a car wreck. Ever the romantic, I still wonder if the boy might have come away changed in some way............
