(I'm on a tear because the current 'virus' MyDoom doesn't use any technical trickery - it totally depends on suckers to open and run it to spread!)

CC theives make lots of gas purchases because it's a good way to check that the card is still working - the gas pump doesn't require any PIN or signature. If it works, it works and you can go on spending. If it's dead, you just drive away.
