Once upon a time, you were a just a climber. That was cool. Once upon a time you climbed a route and cared more about how you climbed it and if you enjoyed it than you did about the number attached to it. That was cool. Once upon a time, climbers were anti-social types who went climbing to get away from a seemingly phony world of made up values and societal norms... that was cool.

Sadly, climbers brought that world with them; the world of definitions, hard facts, and a ladder of accomplishment. We've corporatized climbing. We've put it in tiny little boxes, categories, and compartments. We've given everything it's definition and often feel the need to use these definitions to categorize ourselves. It's too bad really, cuz I'd rather spend my time climbing than worry about what I'm climbing.

But maybe that's because I suck by these climber standards, so I rail against the system... and maybe Wes is just pissed because he can't fit into any of the definitions of climber until his finger heals. Poor bastard.

i don't think wes is attacking anyone personally. for example, if you, artsay, are very proud of sending so-and-so 5.10 route, then cool for you! i think it's more the shitheads who send a 5.10 gear route and try to elevate themselves by saying sport climbers who climb 5.13 couldn't do this. we all know people like that. who isn't like that on at least some level right? or maybe wes was just saying that all climbers are losers. and good for him for being blunt. you've got to admit there's a lot of fucking dumb motherfuckers that climb.

count the # of closed crags due to actions of certain "climbers" if you need a case in point, reminds me of hanging with the Stones, Keith would clean up on the road only to digress when the tour ended, Wes is alright - he justs needs some bourbon.

I think that this getting dark early and cold weather is starting to wear on everyone. It is 2004 and we should be looking forward to an exciting year with new promise of what we can accomplish and the places we'll go. I know that I am just as ready for the temps. to some up and the sun to stay out until 9:00pm, and it will be here in due time...just relax, have fun, and make the best of it, b/c '04 will be a good year.
