JRU, no offense, but you are totally wrong. Bad advice. 4 low is perfect for that stuff. As Ascentionist said you just crawl out, that hill in 4low is a breeze. No slippage, and in 4low you don't have to use the accelerator hardly at all. 4hi you will be spinning wheels.

I just crawled up this hill yesterday in my Cherokee. Agree 4Lo is perfect for a Jeep. No spinning, and you don't get bounced around.

Hey, do what works for you, but that has not been my experience. In my buddy's Tacoma 4 low results in skidding gravel. You can "crawl" out in Hi 4 in first gear with no problem. It is a manual, maybe that makes a difference?

Important: "4-low" does not create more traction - it creates more torque and that can be detrimental when traction is marginal. Slipping tires are more likely in "4 low" than in "4 high"!

Maybe low 4 is better if all of the gravel has already been kicked off by previous drivers?

Or, maybe if your 4x4 is an automatic low 4 is better?

Does anybody know who usually takes care of the roads, and whos responsibility it is? The counties? Oil Company? RRGCC?

Tunica Intima: I have thought about this more and my experiences in 4WD Hi/Low and AWD. You may be right on Low 4 for Bald Rock in its current state. Here is what I think -- thoughts?
Steep graded & gravelled -- Hi 4 with slow to moderate speed but definitely not a crawl
Steep rutted & grooved -- Low 4 with crawl OR Hi 4 / AWD going slow (i.e. not out of first gear)

Q: Would you still use low 4 if the Bald Rock was regraded?

Regarding your 4WD debate. I think your last post is pretty accurate. The only thing I think you all need to take into consideration is the amount of torque and kind of gear ratio your vehicle has. My old suburban has enough torque that I can crawl up the hill in its current state, while in 4-HI and first gear no problem. While I have another truck that I'm pretty sure I would need to put it in 4-Low in order to make it up smoothly. So in other words, it all depends on your vehicle.

For the FWD cars: go as slow as possible, but as fast as necessary. Hitting that hill wide open is only going to tear your car to pieces. If you are going up the hill too slow, just back down and try again with a little more speed. Also do your best to keep your tires on the high points. It's almost impossible now, but at least try and pick out a line before you head up a hill like that. If you are following a car up the hill, make sure to give them plenty of time to get to the top before you try to follow them.

^^ this is bad advice. Just do what pumpout says in the third post and everything will be fine.

Road update: I talked with the county road foreman. They're short truck drivers right now, so they're waiting until they can hire some in order to haul in gravel. If they scrape the road without putting gravel back on it will just turn to mud and then we'll have an even bigger mess on our hands. They're aware of the rocktoberfest date, so it should be finished by then.
