The gate is located where the Dip Wall parking has always been. There is about as much parking as there was before and there are some semi-developed camping spots just beyond the gate. I would agree with it being about a mile further to Purple Valley.

Could you take an ATV around the gate? A mile is a bit far.

Some of us would like to hear just nature sounds when climbing outside. If you think a mile of completely flat, wide, well-maintained, gravel roadway too much to walk, maybe you could pedal your bicycle.

I dont believe ATVs are permitted, but I am not positive on that one. I think clifty wilderness is the only place the atvs are permitted. I could be dead wrong though. http://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/dbnf/recreation/ohv

ATV's, or any mechanized/motorized vehicles are not permitted in Clifty, just FYI. That means no bicycles too. Not that it impacts getting to Purple Valley.

However:
"This section of road will remain open for administrative use and public foot travel only". Sounds like walking only, although I bet you could probably get away with a bicycle.

So then why is there a dedicated atv trail map in clifty? and a link on national forest website with maps?

I'm just going by the Forest Service map:

http://www.redrivergorge.com/pdf/rrg_map_med.pdf

And the Forest Service Website:

http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/dbnf/rec ... ecid=39460

Generally speaking, being designated a wilderness area with the Wilderness Act prohibits recreational use for mechanized and motorized vehicles. Heck, you're not even allowed to use power tools in the Wilderness Zone.

Maybe those area's are actually outside the Wilderness zone, and not part of the Clifty Wilderness? I couldn't find them on the FS website, care to share which trail you think run's through Clifty?
