Careful Syt... If you're not part of the Kool Kids Klub aka the KKK and you start stirring the pot on this site you'll anger someone. And then they'll want to know who you are. Then they'll spend hours and hours going through your old posts in attempt to find your identity. Then they'll do something that's so scary, I don't even know if I should post it: they'll put your identity and phone number out for everyone to call you! (Cue doomsday music) But here's the real kicker- no one calls, because no one cares. Just some little butt hurt named Super Safe Ian. Wouldn't want you to go through the same traumatic experiences I've had to endure

Don't know the specifics about the babies, but I was bit on the pinkie toe by a baby copperhead that apeard to have been about to snack on a lizard before I stepped on its tail. I hurt like hell and swole up like a hobbit for about 2 weeks. I didn't die, and there were no lasting effects.

i can't believe i've never even seen a snake at the Red but, i once pulled up on what i observed at the time and recall as an isolated (not part of any kind of ledge system and not open at the back, and a vertical pitch) horizontal/elongated pocket at the Gunks which had a mid sized copperheaded looking snake curled up inside. as i recall the route was not graded R/X.
training is for people who care, i have a job.

I almost stepped on a Copperhead up at Muscle Beach. I had my guidebook out looking for routes and walking along a faint trail. It was kind of a weird moment and it seemed like someone knocked my book out of my hands. I leaned over to pick up the book and a very large Copperhead was in the middle of the trail curled up just looking at me. One more step and I would have stepped on it. Good thing I dropped my book.

On a side note, I once found a turtle near the top of a route on a tiny ledge. I have no clue how it got there but I did rescue it.

I have had many encounters with copperheads and 1 encounter with a timber rattler. This led me to do alot of research. I cant remember the website I read where they did a study and 9 out of 10 copperhead bites on humans are dry. My friend was bit by a copperhead on the ankle bone. He saw the snake slither away but he did not realize he was biten until 24 hours later when his ankle turned colors and was sore. Not much swelling. My dog was bitten by a copperhead and he almost died. When my dog was bitten he was in noticable pain after about 20 minuites. That being said, if you do get bit and dont notice anything after 20 min, you prob had a dry bite and will be fine. If you have severe pain and issues, you might want to call a Dr. I tend to see the most copperheads in July and August in the red. The most snakes I have ever seen by far is at Koomer Ridge Campground.

Interesting, What would you say the pain would of been on a 1-10 scale?

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the level of pain from a non-dry bite. I've stepped on nails, had large second degree burns, motorcycle crashes etc.. etc.. all these things that was very painful and uncomfortable but very manageable without pain meds.

Dry bite is very managable without pain meds. I would have to ask my dog about the full bite, but I will tell you that he looked like he was in extreme pain for about 1 hour and 45 min. He got 3 injections at that point and he was fine after that.

It also depends on where you get bit. A bite on a boney surface like your ankle or skull makes it difficult for the fangs to penetrate. If you get bit in the calf or the thigh, it might be a little differant.

I'd like to apologize for giving out the wrong info. Instead of Super Safe Ian, I should've put Identity Theft Ian. I'm sorry for any confusion I may have caused...
