wow...!!!!!!!

So many responses.

Thanks to all. Truly.

To the one who asks, I plan on doing the east approach summer of 2012. The east buttress might be a little more than I want to take on at this point.

I look forward to getting to the RRG soon. Let me further de-code the suggestions, and I'm sure I'll be back for more suggestions.

It all depends on the route. Whitney has tourist hiking trails to the top with nothing remotely technical as well as Grade V-VI big wall routes with mandatory 5.11 R. Are you looking at doing the East Face then or what's your plan? The East Buttress is a much better route IMO, although the East Face has some great exposure.

I have a philosophical problem with your approach. Climb because you love it. Don't go climbing to do <train for> one feat and then return <after fait accompli> to being a worthless bag of fat. Show up at the crag get on beautiful route X and tell the world you are doing it to climb some other vision of perfection in your mind. It just seems shallow and lacking any real commitment.

Thanks for your insight and advice.

I'm recovering from a traumatic accident a few years ago and the loss of my wife & children. After years of rehab I'm now near-ready to climb again. I've been able to bike & run, now I want to be a bit more active.

But, when I need someone to bring me "back to Earth" and be a total buzz-kill, you will be the first I contact.

Namaste

Dead loved ones and coming back from a severe injury . . . you have my condolences.
Now back on topic.

Dude, you'll be walking up a mountain on a path. Looks like a lot of hiking with weight and slow-pace running on hilly terrain would be a better training approach than climbing on a rope.

@caribe

The east approcah is rated a 5.6 with some technical components in fact. I'm aware I can do the Mountaineers approach, or even some easier, but I do want to do some scrambling and roping. I'm a novice climber, but I don't apologize for that. I just want to do this climb, and then more if I'm capable. At my age, this will be about as much as I can handle at this time.

All that said, I care neither for your feigned condolences, advice, or "opinion". I need none of them. I surround myself by wickedly cool people, which pretty much leaves you out, Dude.

Cheers
