Even more mind blowing is a 9 year-old girl's ascent of Swingline:
From 8a.nu:
Brooke Raboutou (9) has in two tries done Swingline, 8b in Red River Gorge. The 9-year-old is daugther of 4-times World Cup winner Robyn and Didier, a contendor of being the best onsight climber in the world 20 years ago, who also won a WC event. During the last week, both brother Shawn (12) and Robyn (47) has done two 8b's. It seems like it is time for Didier to step up and do 9a at least?

You are right!!! those kids should be playing outside with their friends, and going on camping trips with their family... Oh wait, thats what they are doing.
How do you know that they aren't having a wonderful childhood experience?

like Buddha says: expectations are the root of all unhappiness. Ever see a middle school kid cry because they got 2nd place in the state science fair? It's messed up.
i remember meeting a guy who, at one point, was one of the youngest kids to ever climb a 5.14. something like 12 years old or something. really nice dude, and still crushed. but....he had some climbing-related ego problems, as i recall. the seed was planted kind of...deep.

I thought in middle school there were no places, everyone gets a participation trophy? One kid worked his butt off to become good at some athletic endeavor, the other kid shows up on day one, both leave with the same thing. Garbage. If they are going to give everyone the same credit in sports why not do it in academics as well? I don't recall getting a participation A+ in math or science.

You must be old--it's cutthroat out there these days. Dumb kids, fat kids, slackers--nowhere to turn but drugs, school shootings, and trad climbing.

Yes, I got to watch a 9 year old girl do my project that I've now been falling off of for 3 years.
