just because some participants really suck at it doesn't diminish the quality of the sport, I believe volleyball is a great sport but if anyone watched my 3rd grade daughters team during this last volleyball season they would have a very hard time believing that, same for sport climbing, watch me work a project & sport climbing is nuts, watch Sharma send Es Pontas and it's an awesome sport

Take the whining out of climbing??? NEVER!!!! That's the only part I'm any good at!

I'm guessing you haven't done much of either....I've got a big handicap when golfing....I've also done a ton of runout slabs up to 5.11d, grew up left coaster son, where the slabs are tall and scary...cal domes, yose, tuo, as well as places short and scary like josh and woodson. I've found that the 'slabs' in this region actually do have holds and don't require that pure no-holds "friction slab" belief like home.

gotta be the real deal..uses all the cool kids abreviations....josh, yose, tuo....sounds like a bunch of Mexican partners....

nah, just lazy to spell it out. "all" climbers should know where they are/what they are, even if they've never done a pitch there....


Edit: I'll take the cool kids as a compliment, most of that old school slab climbing has fallen out of favor with the younger crowd by proxy having cut your teeth on low angle usually makes you 'el viejo'...

Well, we have heard several definitions of sport, but no-one quoted the actual definition of sport:

"competitive physical activity: an individual or group competitive activity involving physical exertion or skill, governed by rules, and sometimes engaged in professionally."

Words two and three of the definition are the line that is trying to be drawn between sport and athletics. What is the rule about using the word in the definition.

Instead of splitting hairs on sport and athletics I like to split between game and sport. We can play a game of monopoly, poker or golf. We can participate in sports like baseball, football or basketball.

You mention linemen, we just saw one of the best in the game not be able to pass a basic conditioning test. That same test administered to John Daly would result in death.

I like your definition of sport and athletics Mike A.L.

I have always used "It isn't a sport unless there is a ball". Sort of tongue in cheek. I think I first heard it on Bob and Tom(Morning Radio).
