You can get thin-walled, wide bore tygon tubing, slit it down the side and wrap the tie-in (or any other part of the harness). Tygon is pretty tough, though coming by short sections isn't easy. I can check in the lab to see if we have any size that would be suitable, but most of our stuff is thick-wall to hold up to vacuum.

clearly spoken from someone who only climbs one or two weekends per year

but yeah, with bolting and climbing, my harness easily sees 75-100 days of rugged action per year....

BD, Petzl, and I'm sure most other harnesses already have a layer of protection around the tie in points. Wouldn't this layer of protection be the same thing as hiding the webbing with tape? No, and here is why: the webbing under that layer of protection is in perfect shape when they put the layer of protection over it. It would not be advisable to put a layer of protection over any worn area since that worn area needs to be monitored.

I recommend just buying a new harness, and then adding webbing to the tie in points and then use nylon thread to sew it. The only problem I see with that is the constant rubbing of the protection layer on the webbing you added will create wear that would need to be monitored. The way you would get around that would be to add a crap load of stitches to prevent all rubbing. For example, just look how the protective layer on the top tie in point is stitched to the harness, with a lot of stitching: http://shop.campleaders.com/media/catal ... arness.jpg

As far as putting tape on your harness, just read my quote below.

Some tapes have an acid in the adhesive. Those will do harm.

How many times have I yelled at you for this? Just buy a new fucking harness when they wear out!

Or better yet, get one of the mammut harneses that have the hard plastic sheath over the part that you tape.

An ArcTeryx rep actually SUGGESTED that I tape over the tie in points before I ever use the harness. So I do. I use Gorilla Tape. It lasts far longer than athletic tape, and doesn't get stringy like Duck Tape.
