In the past week, I have been hiking the trail from Military Parking Lot going to Gray's Arch three times with my dog. I like taking that way up because it's quiet and we have never ran into anyone other than down by Military and Left Flank. The 2nd time I decided to take the D. Boon trail to the right. The trail leads up to a wall from the bottom right and follows back down the hill thru by the creek to the left side and up the hill and then goes back right along the bottom of the wall. This is not too far before you actually reach the Gray's Wall Arch. It's the D. Boon wall. While my dog and I were down by the creek at the D. Boon wall base, I noticed some tree damage that I thought only a person with a very dull ax could have done. My dog and I hiked back up there the next day and took the other trail which led to the wall on the left side. My plan was to go back down by the creek and follow the other trail out to the right. When we reached the wall, I heard ALOT of rustling in the Rhodos down by the creek. Not birds, raccoons but more like a deer or I thought maybe a crazy person. No grunts, just a lot of rustling. Not wanting to run into a crazy person or a buck wanting a fight, we turned around and headed back the way we came instead of taking the loop.
It was thundering anyway and I just decided to head back to the car and call it a day. The strange thing about it is on the way to the wall my dog sat down in the trail three times and wouldn't budge until I walked waaaay past him and called him to come...which is really strange behavior for him.
I know there are a lot of different critters out there in the woods so the noise could have been a coyote, raccoon, turkey or whatever. I have never heard an animal make that much noise. My dog and I were not being quiet (he's almost deaf so any command I give him, I gotta shout) so I know whatever it was probably heard us.
I did not see what was making the noise but it could have very well been that bear.
bear attack?!?!?!
You think that's crap, recently a bear in the Smokey Mntns was put down because a man just had to get a picture of the bear. He approached the bear and the bear swiped at him so per policy, the bear was euthanized. Of course, you all probably know this story from my FB page.
