Andrew told me a story once about how he left his email open while he had a presentation going on the projector. His email kept popping up and it was me and Yasi sending mail about nonsense related to climbing that weekend. The principal was in the room at the time.

Always make sure you have a gmail or hotmail or something. And never leave it running while you are presenting.

Its currently lunch time so listen up suckers.

-In Ohio you absolutely have to have a Masters degree to teach. Not right away but you have one license renewal cycle to do it.
-I am one of the few people that says that I get paid decently well, but here are a few tidbits.
-Yes I only work 9 months but, summers are spent continuing your education which is required for every license renewal even after your masters, I pay for this not the school.
-summers are spent doing curriculum work, PD, meetings, and coaching
-I coach for 1/3 to 2/3 of the year, I have calculated how much I get paid by the hour and its less than 70 cents, yes CENTS an hour
-I work more than 40 hours a week, a lot more
-I will make 44 thousand this year.

Lastly, its the best freakin job in the world. I love it despite all of its problems.

nobody made you coach, you just wanted cup checks.
you aren't worth even 7 cents, yes 7CENTS. not an hour, at all.
i doubt you "work" 40+ hrs. you might BE there but you ain't workin.
how come i see you all summer? i mean, if your "busy" continuing your education and all.

whats for lunch?

bcombs, I took exception with the must have a masters to teach..that is incorrect. they must have a masters to continue to teach. big diff.

that is no different than continuing education for many professions. we have between 24 and 60 hours of unpaid PD each year too....big whoop. it is what you do to be considered a professional.

who with a straight face can honestly act like having 3 months, plus multiple breaks during the school year is a burden on our teachers. seriously? i am willing to bet the majority of teachers chose the profession for these perks. esp. climbing teachers.

you want more money teachers? go work at a for profit institution, where PROFIT (and not taxpayers taxes) pay for your existence.

otherwise, continue to whine about 14 weeks of vacation plus holidays.
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.

The salary of any profession, including teachers - is determined by market forces. You think teachers/doctors are overpaid? Then go get your degree and be overpaid yourself! You think teachers/cashiers are underpaid - then don't be a part of that profession!

Supply and demand sets wages. Unions and government try to interfere, but this is usually counter productive.

And when you look at teachers or many other public sector employees - you can't look at just salary. You have to look at total compensation. The healthcare, pension, sick time, etc benefits offered are usually far better than what private sector employees get.
I've been a gumby longer than you've been climbing.

Guys, please try to stay on topic. This thread is not about teaching, it's about failblog.org.

bcombs, hope you are talking commnity colleges, casue there ain't a high school in this state that requires a masters to teach...not one. right andrew?
Kentucky requires a Master's for re-certification. It matters not really because most University education programs are phasing out undergrad. ed degrees in favor of Masters-only certification.

Don't believe everything you hear Mr. Generalization. I haven't had a summer off in 13 years of teaching. If by perks you mean job security, then yes. But don't kid yourself in thinking that teachers, at least in my district, are on vaction for the summer.
