Does rock climbing need to get "big"
Savage- I agree that there are numerous things that our govt does exceptionally well but and hopefully I'm wrong but it seems people are looking for the govt to do things that were normally handled differently and bankrupt state govts and federal debacles indicate these entities are overextended and overtasked
i am going to try to get this back on topic here. who on here has been coming to the red for a long time? my first trip was back in 2001, and i can remember on nice fall weekends that miguel's would not be all that crowded. now every weekend i show up there are cars backed up and down the road in both directions. this crowd has been growing exponentially for as long as i have been climbing at the red. i guess my point is that the sport will continue to get more popular and more people will continue to flock to the red, no matter what. why you ask? because climbing is fun, people enjoy it for all sorts of reasons. and there will be many pros and cons to this phenomenon. but just because you are strong as hell, and crank down 5.13's like nobody's business, doesn't give you any more of a right to climb then anyone else.
take home message here, don't stress about things you can't control, and don't think just because you are super-strong that you are more deserving of the red than some weak gumby flailing on some 5.8, because your not.

good call, gripster. I've been coming since 01/02 and i struggled on stuff that is too easy for me to warm up on now. Its easy to get frustrated with newbies hogging the climbs, but remember that we were all there once. Also, its not the fact that they suck at climbing that bothers you, its the crag ethics. Teach them! They are gumbies because they dont know the ropes yet. <---- awesome pun!

it's not that i'm super-strong. it's just that i'm better. in general. not flailing on 5.8 is just an added bonus.gripster wrote:don't think just because you are super-strong that you are more deserving of the red than some weak gumby flailing on some 5.8, because your not.

thats exactly what an undeserving gumby flail would say...gripster wrote: don't think just because you are super-strong that you are more deserving of the red than some weak gumby flailing on some 5.8, because your not.
For now, the situation is fine since I can warm up on routes harder than the average specimen of gumby can do. But, when the day of the 5.12 gumby comes (im sure the great Odub has prophesied this coming in his deep lyrics) I will be seriously bothered,.
dude you are so full of yourself. i can't even understand how you can haul that ego of yours up the approach trail, much less send 5.12. like i said before, when i started climbing there were a lot less assholes that could climb 5.12.rustyvasectomy wrote:thats exactly what an undeserving gumby flail would say...gripster wrote: don't think just because you are super-strong that you are more deserving of the red than some weak gumby flailing on some 5.8, because your not.

since 1995 but I won't rant on about the good old days. I will say all the gumbies today are spoiled, they have bunch of sport climbs less than 5.10 to climb, we had sunshine and moonbeam. Thus we had a lot of motivation to climb harder.
more popluarity will create more access issues, lets hope the gumbies of today will be access stewards of tomorrow
