Sendit IT IS ILLEGAL TO USE BOOBIE TRAPS. I know that it is tempting but you will be criminally prosecuted for attempted murder or murder. It's long established. Sorry but the king of the castle rule doesn't change this.
Just an FYI. Dogs are unpredictable. Just watch the show "to catch a thief" In one show two 100 lb. Pit bulls lie there and don't do squat. Hell some follow them around wagging their tails. You just never know what a dog will do until you send a stranger in to test it out. Seriously. Some will protect people but not a vacant area.
Alarm system really is the best way to go. That and better doors, secure windows, etc. Sorry that you're going through this. It really sucks.

it's only illegal if you can prove that there was a booby trap.

When I lived in Los Angeles we had a couple of break-ins. The next time I went to the shooting range I kept one of my paper targets with the head and heart area completely shot out. I taped it to the sliding glass door the thieves came through with the words written on it "IF WE ARE HOME YOU ARE DEAD". When leaving the house we closed up all the curtains to keep them guessing. Never had a break-in after that.

my parent's always left there curtains closed and left the TV or Radio on and a light or 2, so it is hard to tell if someone is there or not.

untrained dogs are worthless. especially if you've socialized them to not be horrifying person-eating machines.
so far, i like the violent sign idea the best. DEATH AWAITS YOU IF I'M HOME or MY NEIGHBORS ARE ELDERLY AND UNARMED.... GOOD LUCK!!!

I second the not getting a golden retriever idea. Great dogs, and would bark when he was penned up, but if anyone let him out, he'd just follow them around wagging his tail like an idiot, probably would show them where the valuables were if they offered a treat.

My sister did research on this for 4 years while in grad school. She interviwed all criminals entering the state pen. They said their 3 big deterrents to breaking into a house were:
1) A dog present (regardless of size)
2) Noise (e.g., TV, radio, anything that sounds like people may be home)
3) Lights on at night or motion sensing lights outside.
They said they were not deterred by alarms because it only takes a few minutes to get the stuff and go.
In my neighborhood, people with alarm syatems were burgled, but no houses with a dog have had any trouble.
