Hmmm.....

Me thinks he has a point none of you "holier than thou's" can dispute. I don't remember much bitching about the video....

Nice job Greg, wish I'd have thought of it.

and surley, my actions are "reckless."

I think "surly" means grouchy.
And "surely" means almost grouchy.

so maybe grouchy, but never reckless, my friend.

512OW. Thanks for your backing throughout all this. It is good to see there is one sane voice amid the chaos of argument. However, the true community has not ruined my satisfaction. After word got around miguels, every single person that confronted me about what I did was very positive. Everyone, the oldschoolers, the new schoolers, the locals, were very supportive. They said that what I did was daring, beautiful, impressive, and right. This shit that people spew from their desks does not bother me. There is a reason I am part of this board. I love controversy. I thrive on it. At no point in this am I actually upset. I know the true locals, the true red river gorge climbers, the people that are there, right now, climbing, in the midst of it all, understand me and my intensions. The internet is just a medium for people to hide behind their words. There are no consequences. Everyone can express their own opinion. Its awesome!

Why do I solo?
Because the summer was too damn hot do send hard, and I was getting bummed for not progressing.

and soloing helped you up your game? sounds rational. good luck sending even harder in cool temps.

I do have two comments. People can't tell you what you did was "right". You did it for you, I assume Their assessment of right or wrong should in no way factor into that decision. You make the choice, you live with the outcome.

And on a more serious matter. Never , EVER again try to define "true locals and true red river gorge climbers" without first consulting the pigsteak corollary playbook. I will sue you if you take my thunder. You solo, I will define what a "real" climber is or isn't. It takes many years of surly presumptiveness to piss off gumbies, 5.8 traddies, 5.12 wannabees, and hot college co-eds. You climb too hard to appreciate all of this.

I thought I remembered some critique of that aspect of the video - for just about the same reasons.

Anyway...I wish I could be short sighted again.

i have to agree with this... i heard quite a bit of critique, and i am not even a red river gorge "lifer," or "veteran," or whatever you want to call it (e.g. wasn't down every weekend, etc). i was at miguel's the day spencer filmed that, and when he came back and showed the footage, there were definitely mixed reviews.
not sure, since i have never asked, but i am pretty sure andrew got opinions from both sides for his flip/jump as well.

Critique.... Yes.

Opinions.... Yes.

Mixed reviews.... Yes.

But bitching?? Name calling?? Accusations??

Nope.

Not publicly... especially not to this extent.

Fact is, all the arguments on here accusing Greg of potentially limiting access are based on absolutely NOTHING. There is no precedent for crag closure due to death from soloing.

Several people have hit the ground at the Lode while roped up. Those people shouldn't be allowed to climb/ belay at privately owned crags anymore, should they? Their success rate is worse than Gregs...
