A fall from syncro wouldn't necessarily kill you, its only 50 some odd feet with a large ledge at the bottom. However, a fall from Bohica would end in death or head injury if your unlucky.

I think it's funny how people want visibility of this issue to go away yet continue posting in this thread.

Ha, guess the mention of my name means I should say something? Some of the (limited, easy) soloing I have done has been on private land. Maybe not the best thing to do, and this thread will cause me to think pretty hard about doing so again. That said, it seems to me that the land owner would have less exposure to a successful lawsuit where someone gets hurt while not using the existing safety gear. In contrast to someone getting hurt when the in place gear fails (as has happened at the load more then once), and, it is my understanding that the KY recreational use statute protections for the landowner would be the same, soloing, leading, tr'ing, or just walking up the trail.

And, for Terry, the only thing I am going to say, is that he did post photos of his solo, though he removed them.

Soloing, like climbing, is a personal choice, true. But, try to make sure your actions do not screw up things for others.

I've been reading this thread for a while now. And while a free solo of Bohica is ballsy as hell, it is even more reckless and stupid. I had both handholds break while going for a redpoint on that route. I fell with a heel-toe locked solidly in place and tore a ligament in my knee and nearly broke my leg.

I am not exactly a big person but still managed to rip holds off. Sorry I just don't get it. The risks far outweigh whatever personal satisfaction the person may have experienced. It is careless and reckless regardless of what level of climbing you are at. My husband is an ER Nurse and whenever we see some gumby climbing without proper common sense we head the opposite direction. (He says he is off work!)

While people soloing at this level are hardly gumbies their apparent disregard for other peoples unintentional and unwanted involvement in their circus, their narcissistic need to prove something to themselves is appalling.

The syncronisity example is completley relevant.
Both climbs are highly traveled routes at the red river gorge. And younging climber, what the hell are you talking about??? they are both deadly falls...

Thats your opinion. You can't have any idea how much satisfaction he garnered from soloing BOHICA. Of course, now that the "community" has neatly ruined any personal satisfaction he may have felt, you may be right in your reckless assumptions.

And lets thank the great Spencer Victory for protecting access to the motherlode by videotaping 100 foot loong backflip whippers off surley permanent bolts in the same corbin sandstone... You know, from the amount of horrible access endangering stuff that goes on at the lode, from the steep trail to the free soloing, I am suprised people are still alowed to climb there...

With such a thin lines between "daring" "reckless" and "beautiful", your definitions of what may close acess are very subjective. Long victory whippers on scetchy bolts are "cool," dean potter's free solos are "mindblowing" and surley, my actions are "reckless."

just curious. asking because I don't and am too chicken to try it that close to my limit.
