A lot of stereotypes thrown about, but here is one that I really have noticed.
You run into a stranger in the "north"- comes across as super up tight, stand offish, why are you talking to me/ what do you want from me.
You run into a stranger in the "south"- friendly, helpful, warm, someone you can talk to immediately, even share personal details with and he with you.
I like that. I don't like the reaction I have had when in the "north". Always makes me want to go home.
What is it about the north- too crowded? cold temps make people cool to engage others, big city mentality? What?
(disclaimer- of course these are generalizations, but my experience.)

Ditto. Also, why is it suspect to walk down the street at a leisurely pace with your head held hi and say hello to people when your eyes meet? I was taught to be friendly and to acknowledge people. When I do that up north they look at me like I am crazy or should be in a straight jacket.
Also Tomdarch, Chicago has a TERRIBLE record of racial supression. Just look at the Chicago 7. When they were on trial the only black defendant was duck taped to a chair by order of the judge. Blacks were oppressed in Chi-town because the poor blacks competed with poor whites for jobs. No state in this country is lily white when it comes to racial oppression.

I would be pissed too if I lived in the flatlands. You couldn't triple my salary to get me to move back to chi-town. And if they quadruple it and I end up moving back, I sure as hell don't wan't no friendly southerner smiling at me every time I walk by.

can one be racist towards their own race??really. rascism is rascism. don't tell a black joke but did you hear about the mexican, or the arab, or the what have you. it's o.k. to pick on gays and such, as long as you don't bring their color into the equation.

...sprag...you said "lily white"...is that a subtle racist remark?
being a northerner, I can't say people have been anymore friendly in Lexington and the Ville than from the town I came from. perhaps it is a big city/small town thing more than a geographic thing. back home for me (the north), every farmer in every pickup truck had to wave at you, even when they didn't know you. i'd call that pretty friendly.
here's what it all boils down to...every single one of you schmucks has a built in identity that you are trying to preserve/justify. to do that, you have to 'defend" your "own" as superior, less racist, more friendly, better mannered, etc...
sad but true, it is merely human nature at work in all of us.

Probably because you do.
These attitudes you refer to apply to any big city, north or south, east or west. Don't forget the small towns outside of them, but you probably don't have a reason to visit and correct your prejudice.
Either way, saints and assholes are mixed in each town/city. No place is the golden city for diversity.
We're quite a mixed nation and we're still learning how to co-exist past the "I'm special" mindset that sits on top of fear and ignorance. That poor quality exists everywhere and to different degrees, in every person.
