If however, there is a higher authority, then there may very easily be a universal standard. (Full disclosure: this is what I believe.)
very true.. but can we know that standard? i've just seen too many times where christian or other leaders have called something "bad" or "good" and it's been way off and led to a lot of hurt and pain of others. i think it's a matter of spiritual arrogance for those people (ie: religious leaders) to declare, "this is good," or, "that is bad," and let other believe that it is so. these declarations lead to things like the crusades, the kkk, the jihad against "infidels", the holocaust, and who knows how much else. how many times have people been helped or saved by what they thought was originally a curse? or a blessing? it's like knowing the will of god.. being such small, infinitesimal beings, how could we ever know such vastness?

Can't believe I'm weighing in on this stupid ass thread but certain proselytizing imbecility should not go unchecked....

I want you to know that I don't mean any of this in some hyper-spiritual way. There is no smarmyness here.None of that nature tree hugging buhda crap or that "roll your own" "belief system.......Belief system what a bunch of bunk. All that political correctness talk is about is people who have no structure or truth trying to legitimatize their lack of truth in their life........
And so the truth and structure that is not found in your bible (interesting text, but a book nonetheless) is the only acceptable structure or source of truth on the planet?
Ultra wrote:.... The Bible clearly states that "It is appointed for man to live once, then Die. After that, the Judgement."... So it would seem that you can't be a Buhdist and a Christian.
Again, it's an edited text wrought with political and societal influence and literal christians do its message a disservice.
Ultra wrote:.....I grow so tired of me stating that I am a Christian and all these decieved souls telling me how they "believe in god and buhda and tooth faeries, and my 'belief system ' is a valid as yours". So in a word. No it is NOT
Me too, you sound like simple minded bigot. Oddly enough that seems to be one of the most consistent characteristics of christians in this country so from where I'm sitting, your fuxxored belief system provides me with little validation.

The relationship I have with my god is purely between us. It's something you have no right to question.

it's all fine and good. My comment was about my reaction, not his story. i just "hear" him doing it in that pouring out his heart evangelistic speak that really almost ruined religion for me. I think it's funny that i react that way based on my poor association with that kind of melodramatic believer.

a lot of it is his use of the word "heck". that just slays me!!! ;-)

then they aren't a Christian because we have a few specific beliefs that link us...
well, according you they aren't and according to them you aren't. see the problem and the initial question?

oh and I'm bowing out bc I see no point arguing with people who aren't Christians and don't even understand or care to understand what we believe...they just want to pick a fight

..and it is.

the life you lead would be appauling to many christians.. and the life they lead would be silly to you. the catholic church is the best example i can think of..
