Ode to Saint Kindred

‘Round campfires in the Red, it was often said
He was, indeed, our own village fool;
About these crags, this boy had his brags
As he drawled, “Over y’all, I do rule!â€

To An Athlete Dying Young

THE time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all runners come, 5
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay, 10
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers 15
After earth has stopped the ears:

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man. 20

So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head 25
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

A.E. Housman

I keep thinking of Terry Route names
- Literal People
- Professional Risk Manager - (When I challenged him on whether he had a death wish when he solo'ed Synchronicity, he said "Shit Hugh. I am a professional pilot. I am a professional risk manager. Balancing risk is what I do!"
The narcissistic fucker convinced me. I backed off.

Yeah dude, he had a bunch of us snowed. I sat down with him one afternoon in Joseph-Beth's and talked all about my experiences with suicide and how these sorts of things had affected me and the ones that I love. I told him that I thought suicide to be the most cowardly and selfish act one can commit. It was really the one and only time that I talked to him about anything other than climbing. I wish that he would have listened...
Terry was a good guy, that is for sure and I sure do miss him. Saint? Fuck no.

I'm sure he listened, but sometimes pain overwhelms reason. I just can't be angry at the guy knowing how badly he was hurting. I do still wish, though, that I could have done something to help ease his pain...

Yep, yep and yep.
