About the blood donating stuff I mentioned before:

The deal is that a build up of iron in your body can cause heart problems. Women release excess iron when they have their period but, men don't have this release so donating blood puts them on a more even foot with women on their iron levels.

From what I remember from my micro-bio class, invading bacteria (some which could affect the heart) have increased virulence if it can bind to iron in the cells. However, the body's has an immune defense to move the iron from the invaded site. Of course, that may all depend on how healthy the person is or if there is some condition that compromises this.

I heard someplace as well that giving blood helps to relieve joint pain - something about iron buildup in joint areas. I don't know that it makes any sense, but crazier things have happened.
