now lurk it's possible to educate yourself while at the migs (but yeah lets face facts) you can explore the woods and local color or make it what you want. one or two moths can fun but it does get tiring.
If you are just planning on doing it for a few months...I actually envy you. A Large part of me wants to do the same thing when I graduate PT school....but alas....other things get in the way...I say go for it.
Tent advice...IMO...if you have 150 bucks to spend get a mountain hardwear light wedge. That thing is bomber and in the humid summer days breathes like a champ! Like wes said tho...make sure you have a footprint or tarp and rainfly or tarp overhead cause shit gets sooo damp it may not dry until fall! Ya know you could always relocate to Campton or Slade? Although I dont know if they have much use for a medical physicist.

Feed the goats as much scraps as possible even pick through the garbage sometimes as long as it's veggies they'll eat it. Watch out for anticlmber. Don't become an alcoholic. And for gods sake wear a rubber! Not that I'd know anything about that. And whatever else anticlmber said.
Don't start getting stoned and drunk and going soloing at night. As soon as one of you dumb shits dies its gonna suck for the rest of us, not you you'll be dead. If you feel the need to take a risk when all fucked up and bored don't use a condom
