Holy crap, man - you're supposed to be all contrary, devil's-advocate-y - what's with this straightforward stuff?
But I pretty much agree with you. I don't think it's quite so straight forward - if almost everyone voted, we'd get better quality results. Rather, I think that the results would be more moderated in general (which means that the far right would be marginalized). But at the same time, there are a lot of people out there who know amazingly little and there are a lot of people who believe some very weird stuff. How about a debate between the Angles Are Real Party candidate versus the UFO Party candidate versus the Cambodia is the Capital of Africa Party candidate?
The key is for people to both actually vote in large numbers AND for people to take the time and the effort to get educated and engaged in the issues. Sadly, that combination isn't very likely.

If there was ever any doubt you're not a Republican, this statement is it. Oddly enough, a lot of Republicans are saying they're leaning towards Obama because he's different. I'm really quite amazed.
On why people don't vote we should look who doesn't vote. Correct me if I'm wrong but most of them are poor and correct me if I'm wrong, but there hasn't been an obscenely wealthy person in the final run for President in the last century at least. Why vote for someone who not only can not relate to you but mostly makes sure you're fucked?
But the flipside kicker of this is a woman my dad saw on television before the last election. She was voting for Bush because she didn't feel she could vote for a rich man, meaning Kerry. Bush comes from a long line of privileged, wealthy criminals (I think it started with murdering Indians and taking their land) and has never had to think about money in his entire life. He's a man that thinks it's good that someone should be working three jobs to afford health insurance because he's NEVER HELD A REAL FUCKING JOB IN HIS LIFE. But somehow the great Republican spin machine convinced these stupid Republican types that he was a regular guy.

I guess you can debate wether things like "university professor" or "attorney general of the state of Arkansas" count as "real fucking jobs". While I can't quickly find anything specific, I'm guessing that as the son of a single mom who needed scholarships to go to college, that Bill had some 'real fucking jobs' in high school and during summers while he was in college.

Back on the topic of John McCain: in response to the Obama "Yes We Can" video, there's this:

Personally, the above inspired me greatly (to keep supporting Obama)
