I don't think it's a question of "too much redpointing" or not. I would consider myself on onsite climber (because that's what I like to try and do........many new routes at or near my limit) but just because I happen to tick a route I decided to give a second go on doesn't mean I'm doing "too much redpointing". Also, if there's a tick mark on a route and I go for the hold I sure as hell ain't gonna take the onsite away from myself. Ever been on a sport route at the Red? Good luck trying to use the myriad of tick marks to find your way up a route.

If you're never giving a route more than one go than you sure as hell ain't gonna get anywhere with technique or strength.

You have a good approach SCIN. I certainly would turn directly to a redpoint attempt after a failed on-sight & some ticking followed by brushing would not be out of order. What I am talking about and have seen is this. A designated ropegun puts up the draws. Then the ropegun or others in the group tick the route. The non-ropeguns in the party then work the route to death, maybee even ticking more holds or re-ticking. ALthough I don't have any information to back it up, I suspect that people who come to RRG on a road trip have a certain list of routes they want to do, and are more prone to ticking/redpointing?

Almost every route we got on in the southern region was tic-marked to the max.
If you have to use tic-marks, scrub the damn things off when your done  Oh yeah, and no, it's not an "outdoor gym".
With all the chalk on everything, I'm not going to complain about tic marks. But who the fuck are the morons putting tic marks on bad holds? Leave the good tic marks, but get rid of the tic marks on the slopey, shallow crap! I don't want to lunge for that crap when I'm pumped!:)
