I would think that it would train you in some aspects, but I would think that it wouldn't train the pulling motion needed to climb upward. Maybe you could set an up/down traversing problem (make it look like a line on an EKG).
I think what Captain was trying to say for "muscle failure" is basically taking your body to its lactic acid threshold (ultimate fatigue). Stressing your body in training builds up mitochondria - the powerhouse of cells - and trains your body to utilize lactic acid as a fuel (when it's absorbed, it's converted to glucose). Hugh might have a better explanation, but here's a simple article on it:

how do you deal with the urge to vomit that being in a climbing gym causes?

Hard is hard, regardless if it is sideways, up and down, or backwards. And since climbing hard is the best way to climb harder, I think your sideways problem is helpful. Now just set some more cool stuff that I can actually do, and all will be well!

I have to second what anticlimber stated. I have been on the 4x4 routine recently and have noticed a significant strength increase in route climbing.

I third anticlimber and second rastman combined with what Wes said. Whore-ratio also touched on this issue in his initial rhetorical question to the Captain--indicating that the grade of the continuous climbing is most important than whether you are traversing or ascending. If you are targeting 5.13 moves wearing yourself out on 5.11 climbs is not going to be as good as wearing yourself out on upper 5.12 routes. Powerful, raw flesh moves applied sequentially will hammer the body into shape for the hard stuff.
Caveats:
1) This is an opinion, mine + many other people I have discussed this with.
2) You run a greater risk of injury while training (This is not an opinion).
3) I am not there yet, so I may not know what the hell I am talking about.

Besides, how does everyone preach all this, when I've seen exactly 3 people actually training at local gyms....??? Ya'll read too much.[/quote}
not all of us have a good gym to go to, (let alone the urge) or the multi-million dollar thug and bitch rap lifestyle some on here might enjoy to be able to afford a gym pass. when i do get one that is the method i prefer. that or a fast campus board workout as long as i'm climbing pretty regularly outside.

caribe does not know what the hell he is talking about...I agree with that.
pru, the vomiting has more to do with your hatred of people than it does with the setting.

You suck Lurkist. I got so excited to read your opinion on the matter and it wasn't even related. Don't be so selfish with your wisdom.
