I spoke with the editor who wrote the article. He is a proponent of close bolts and no decking potential at the third/fourth bolt. Honestly, I think that if you deck at the third or fourth bolt your belayer is inattentive. But I'm also NOT a fan of the loop of rope that many people leave in the system regardless of the decking potential. I just jump and that seems to work just fine. That's just me though.
