Well, I don't know if I can speak for Japan in general, but they have nuts too. My wife considered doing one of those programs where you live in Japan and teach English, but decided against it, primarily because of me, I think. Anyway, the girl who did take the job, also took the living arrangements the company made. Her landlord killed her. The world's fucked, bro. But there's too many way cool things in it to let that get you down. Grass is only greener when you put the work in to make it that way. Blood and bodies make good fertilizer. Maybe the best.
And hell, man, the most nervous I've ever been walking down a dark alleyway was in Italy. Given enough metrosexuals kicking you in the shin and I guarantee anyone is gonna go down. And the knife wielding Albanians are illegal immigrants the Carbs can't police up anyway. Those guys epitomize police brutality. One of them held a machine gun to my head at a routine traffic stop! Then told me to have a nice day. The whole world is crazy. But how else are you gonna get cool stories to tell your buddies?

Alan, but I would rather die knowing I did all I could if I felt I was going to be killed in the altercation any ways. Alan did the right thing given his circumstances. I have been developing on a no non-sense basic self defense system, similar to the Israeli "Krav Maga", to keep up with real self defense situations. I dont use wishy washy traditional methods of strike and counter strike. I strike first if I feel the situation will eventually come to violence, a good offense is the best, well, anything! I will do all I can to de-escalate the situation through dialogue, when that does'nt work and I feel I cannot escape without harm to me or my principle/family/friend/etc.etc.. I use Gracie Jui Jutsu for ground fighting, Western Boxing and Muay Thai for kicking and in close combat, a little Kenpo, and assorted other techniques, picked up over the years for the hand to hand system. I use single stick, knife, and hand gun as my primary weapons, these all can be carried with a KY CCDW permit. I would be glad to trade some time with my skill, for climbing skills on your part. I thought there were two guns (three kids) but one handed the gun to the other behind my back so I just saw two of them with a gun. I had several opportunities to take the gun and kill all three of them but it was me and my brother and I did not for a moment think it would be safer to attack these little fuckers than to give them my shit. Of course it's going to eat me up forever that I didn't.
The thing is, we were loading a washing machine onto a trailer when they walked up behind us. How many of you wear a gun when you're lugging shit to a truck? Could you pull a knife out of a sheath before a twitchy kid pulled a trigger? I had a folding knife on my belt but never even considered going for it because these kids were nervous and I would've had to get the thing open and close the distance (the one with the gun was standing off a bit). It was a bad scene that wasn't as bad as I thought.
Gotta say, my brother took the chance at the last minute and shoved the gunman out the door and slammed it. The one with the gun was getting crazier sounding by the second and I was trying to set myself to rush him for the same reason.
Oh, and the idea that any "Old" European country even comes close to the violent crime rate of the US is absolute fantasy. 4 out of 100,000 deaths in this country are due to murder. Finland is the closest of "old Europe" countries at half that rate. France has about a third as many murders per capita as we do. Switzerland has less than one per 1,000,000 deaths due to murder. Add guns to the calculations and we're suddenly number 8 in the world per capita after countries like South Africa, Columbia, and Mexico with 3.6 per 100,000 coming from guns. Portugal is the first "old Europe" country on the list at .8 per 100,000.
The cops don't invade the projects here in America either. Here it's because they just don't fucking care. It took over 20 minutes for a cop to arrive (we actually flagged one down that was just driving by and hadn't heard the call) day before yesterday. If our cops were worried about crime there would be at least one cop car in those fucking projects at all times. They're not there, they're cruising slowly through the white folks' neighborhoods. I know this for a fact as I work on really nice houses and regularly see the cops pass by every hour or two. There's no crime over by Bowman field and the golf courses there but you can bet your ass you'll see a cop drive down any street there at least twice a day. Police presence is bullshit meant to make the rich feel comfortable, it has nothing to do with crime prevention or it would happen in my neighborhood. I've spent entire days working outside at my place downtown and haven't seen a single cop that wasn't just passing through at 45mph (in a 35mph zone) with his eyes straight forward. Our police force is a fragile pile of shit and if they were evered faced with a real challenge they'd fold just as quickly as the New Orleans cops did under Katrina. We all know how well that worked out.

As I stated, you did the right thing, reguardless, of what you have second guessed with hind sight. What if you shoved them out the door and they shot through the door and hit your brother??? Then how do you live with yourself??? I have taken a seminar on close quarter combat with a guy armed with a knife and me a pistol concealed in several places on my body. The average person can clear twenty feet and stab you with a knife in 2 seconds or so, the average person... The guy hopped up on meth or crack, probably could do it in less. I was humbled that day, I got stabbed every time before I could get my pistol out, no matter where I had it. By the end of the day I could fend off the guy long enough to shoot him, from the hip, zen style, but I had to sacrifice my arm to his blade, fair trade I think.
Alan, I will not argue the statistics on Old/New Europe with you, I see innocent people unable to defend themselves by not having the right to, in any way, especially with guns. You, see people who have only had so few murders, because of the lack of firearms. It's a proven fact that when people can defend themselves, they do, with confidence, and crimes against the meek slow down. It's also a proven fact that criminals of all levels will only attack soft targets, because of the ease of the crime. Suddenly grandma isn't such an easy mark, when she may be armed, most small time criminals will not risk they're lives for a few dollars. I have been in more than my share of events where I could have been a victim, but usually someone prevented it, or I assisted someone who was more on the ball and have avoided having to kill someone outright, so far! I have had to fire my weapon twice, both times I was able to scare off the thugs with superior fire power, or so they thought at' least. I think the element of suprise was in my favor both times, they thought there would'nt be any resistance, and when they were the targets, instead of us, they fled, both times. Alan, if you want, I will work with you for three to four hours, and you "WILL" know how to, or if, you should take out your attackers. I know you are more than capable physically and have the mentality, but sometimes we all need a method to our madness, think clearly, not angrily when confronted with a threat, it's hard man, I know!
