looks like they would've covered only $5K of it (see Coverage A, 1st bullet) assuming that they haven't hit their cap (Coverage A, 8th bullet) and that Liz didn't fall under any of the Exclusions

I had insurance that I was really happy with. Imagine that! My wife required a bone marrow transplant and the total bill was for over $1.5 million. All I had to pay for was the deductable.
The key to this whole process was getting the approval of the chief physician stating that he would accept what the insurance considered as "Reasonable and Customary" as payment in full. With this in hand, if they charged $1,000 for a procedure and the insurance covered $850, they would write off the balance. By doing this, it saved me well over $250,000. The second thing I did was to approach the hospital once all was said and done and presented an option to them for the balance of what was owed to them. Armed with the approval from the physician, along with a proposal of what I was willing to pay as a lump sum, they wrote off a sizable amount as well.
Once all was said and done, I ended up paying out of pocket just my deductable and then another $1,500 to one of the doctors that refused to accept the insurance payment as payment in full.
Approaching this in this manner, it saved me well over $300,000.
In addition, I was actually paid back several hundred dollars by the insurance company after finding billing errors from the hospital. They had a program where if a disputed charge on a bill was corrected, they would pay the difference back to me. 8)

GWG, your signature line ("By the work, one knows the workman!") sure applies in Liz's case! Tomorrow morning she goes back into surgery here in Indy to repair the "work" done at UK Medical Center.

dude, you got off cheap. my wife was almost killed last month when her horse threw her. that ride from our farm cost us $17,000. in a helicopter you could be at muir valley in about 3 or 4 minutes from here. so i figure it cost about $100 a minute to ride in that thing. UK med center sucks after they realized she was not going to die they rushed us out the door like unwanted-in-laws.
