I lived in the South for most of my adult life. In Savannah, Georgia I heard some dumb-ass cracker say, "God I hate a nigger" at least once a month. White people in the Deep South are, for the most part, bigotted asswipes when it comes to race. They may be the sweetest, most giving people on earth... if you're white. Yeah, yeah, you're not racist and you lived in the South. Well, for every one of you I've met a dozen card carrying members of the KKK. You, as an enlightened Southerner are part of the Enlightened South. The opposing dozen live in the knuckle dragging South. They're different.
All that being said, fuck the South. And fuck Texas if it believes it's not part of the South. It's hot there and it smells like HELL in really amazingly huge parts of the southwestern part where they have the feed lots. It's hard to believe anything could smell that bad.

Back to the report. Most of it is taken up by bibliography and footnotes. Arguments for both sides are presented clearly and a conclusion is reached in each case, sometimes unanimously, sometimes not, but pretty clearly on the side that the death penalty should be abolished. Isn't there one death penalty proponent that will defend it against this report? Bill O'Reilly hasn't done this one yet?

Yeah, one should never let ones experience teach them about human nature. I guess deep down every one of those white people I've heard say, "God I hate a nigger" or, about someone like MLKing or Malcolm X, "Just another dead nigger to me" were really, deep down, good people. Did I mention that every one of the people I've heard say that were native to the Deep South and were all white? But I shouldn't think they are representative, right? Because if they were they'd be disenfranchising black voters by the hundreds of thousands and executing more of them and electing outright racists.
I think the death penalty is barbaric. There is no reason for it other than retribution and retribution isn't a good enough reason for anything, much less killing another human. It just so happens that the South, especially Texas, seems to have no problem with lining people up at the gallows despite the proven unfairness of it. There are people like them in office all through the South and people that will vote for people like that. Here in Kentucky they would never stand a chance.

if we argue the death penalty by itself, without race attached (although often, unfortunately, that is inherent), i will take the bait. i have to admit that i am not completely opposed to the death penalty, depending on the circumstances. however, i did find the document a bit dry to read, and as far as the racial argument goes, i definitely won't argue in favor of racial inequality. i think you would be hard-pressed to find someone on the board who will argue that all races ARE treated equally, because at this point I think most people realize this is not reality.
