For Reference: Emergency Room Locations
just in case you bust your shit in Red Rocks, don't go to University hospital. I sat there for 4 hours with a broken knee before i got any attention. and i had told them i hit my head on the way down, it didn't seem to make a difference that i could have had head damage.
Sand inhibits the production of toughtosterone, so get it out and send.
I wrote the following directions in my guide book - haven't needed it yet - but if I do, i know where to look!
Closest ER:
64 W
Right on Ex 94
L on Bypass Rr
L @ 1st light - Lexington Ave
1 mile on right
Muir Valley Emergency Directions:
Call help on radio ch 5.10 or 3 bursts on emergency whistle - wait 5 sec/repeat
tell dispactcher: injured person in muir valley near rodgers in wolfe county & need to connect wolf county emergency medical service. Tell EMS Addy is 2316 KY Highway #715. The Emergency Rd Down into the valley has county rd sign "webber valley lane" and is on the west side of 715 just south or Rogers Elementary School. Report accidents to Rick & Liz webber 606-668-9066 or 317-291-0354 or 317-402-0123 or 317-402-0118
Problem was, when i hurt myself, it wasn't bad enough for an ER and i didn't know where an urgent care facility was. i ended up waiting 16 hrs before i got my foot looked at. not such a big deal bec i just sprained it and the pain killers were doing their job. it would probably be a good idea to write directions to urgent care facilities too.
Thanks for the tip about being able to call RRO or True North!!! That's good to know.
Personally, if you're going to get hurt, I find that it was much easier to injure myself on routes where a RRO guide was already climbing! That way, he could rescue me so much more quickly!
Hope that helps.

Years ago I friend of mine fell while trying to make the 3rd clip on Dragonslayer at Roadside. The rope was wrapped around his index and middle finger and pretty much de-sheathed those two fingers (I did stop him before he hit the ground though). I quickly lowered him, cut the rope from his harness (to save time untying), and ran to the car and the closest phone to call 911. The ambulance met us on the road as we drove back to the intersection of 15 and 11 and I followed the ambulance thinking that they were going to Lexington or Winchester. However it went to Stanton. During the ambulance ride they determined that he needed to go to Louisville due to the extent of injury to his fingers. So a helicopter was waiting in Stanton to fly him to Louisville. I drove back to Roadside and picked up our gear and met him in Lousville. By the time I got there he was on an operating gurney getting wheeled into ER. I told him it was no fair if he got a cool new bionic hand or something. His wife drove down from Indy later that day and that was the first time I got to meet her. Great first impression! He ended up losing his index finger, but kept all the rest.

Ha, that's funny because Eric took me to an emergency room after we were climbing in Southern Indiana.Meadows wrote:I bet it was Eric - he has a good story.
Although his response to Greg's wife when he lost his finger at Roadside was classic. I heard it was something like, "Everything's okay, the helicopter is here now."

hmmm, maybe this warrents a page in the next edititon of the guidebook!
2 for me.
One was a climber who rappelled off the end of his rope from 30 feet. 10 years of experience, 5.12/v9 climber, just not paying attention. It was in Owens so getting him out was an adventure. Broke his, leg, hip, bit through his toungue and was pretty beat up. He was lucky to not have died or gotten paralyzed.
the other time was in France. and involved a poisonous snake bite. that added some additional confusion to an already crazy situation. My friend almost died but after 3 doses of antivenom pulled through.
hopefully i never have to go again.
