i tore a ligament a couple weeks ago on the outside of my foot. I was running down stairs and caught the edge of one just on the inside of my foot. it immediately turned black and swoll up like a golf ball, similar to what happened when i broke various bones in the past. i couldn't really walk for a day and half, but it magically healed somehow and i could walk just fine. it's still a bit sore and stiff when trying to stretch it out though.
anyway, you're completely screwed with the ankle.

If you can get a good yoga class where most poses are standing, that would help.

after you are mostly healed and are back to hiking and climbing. Balance on one foot(the bad ankle) for a minute or so many times a day. Any PT will tell you that does wonders to help repair the nerve ending connections that were lost from the injury.

I'm with Ho here you're gonna be hating everything for eternity but for field sports and hiking I was given a half sock with shoestring lacing and velcro straps to garner some support, you will continue to suffer and most likely have several more sprains and in an attempt to protect your ankle will most likely do permanent damage to your knees- Jager, breakfast at RRO and Miguel's pizza are your only good times left, Cheers!

Do this on the balance disk/wobble board I mentioned.

I agree not to baby it too much. I went to work the next day. Of course I work with orthos and PTs, so I had lots of help. My ankle and foot looked like a plum with toes!
Wine sounds good, and if anyone is around who will feel sorry for you, well.....whine!

I tweaked mine somehow last spring - i swear i think i did it in my classroom somehow. It swelled jus a little and went down after a couple of weeks of wearing an ace bandage. Ive been biking a good little bit this month and it's all irritated and tweaky again. I wonder if one of my cleats is out of adjustment. damn ankle swells, goes down, hurts, then doesn't hurt, all in the same day.
