I like the poetry so far.
I try to be a good man but all that comes
of trying is I feel more guilty.

A long-time favorite. I keep it pinned to the corkboard at work to remind me why I choose my profession.

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

An old Classic most have heard. But never hurts to repeat:

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan- like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms ..."

I found you in the dark
like a bat finds a bug
fallen from the wall
lying flat on the rug

leaned in close to whisper
lips next to your ear
with the echo of your shape
still ringing in my ears

last night I had a dream
walking down a tiled hall
the air was full of steam
and voices through the wall

you pulled me underwater
pushed my shirt to the floor
turned the valves on hot
washed me head to toe

if I find you in the dark again
in glowing sonar blips
while cat's eyes blink in vain
I will kiss you on the lips
No chalkbag since 1995.

I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE
"The Prophet"

sun shines on my face
how it's golden design
rain falls in this place
and the fields come alive
days are only rumours we've wasted

we cross the millions
we'll see where we stand
far removed from the womb
will you carry me across the sea?
will you carry me?
we can drink from fountains
and the taste of truth
far removed from the womb

rhythm and mind
don't waste no time
want to let it all out
when the chains fall off
and the walls fall down
when we break the seal
and our hearts pour out
when the frozen ground
comes alive around us
with a scream
I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

On Self-Knowledge ~ Kahlil Gibran

And a man said, "Speak to us of Self-Knowledge."
And he answered, saying:
Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.
But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.
You would know in words that which you have always know in thought.
You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.
And it is well you should.

The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;
And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.
But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;
And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.
For self is a sea boundless and measureless.

Say not, "I have found the truth," but rather, "I have found a truth."
Say not, "I have found the path of the soul." Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path."
For the soul walks upon all paths.
The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.
The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

That cowboy, was a short and fairly obscure contribution.
