The Mayor

Movies, music, food, blood, dogs, Horatio.....

In Redriver Ruckus, do you think that Spencer portrayed people from E. Kentucky in a negative light?

Yes, Spencer should die.

Kind of, he should have left it out.

Kind of, but it was pretty cool.

No, the people on the video were just being themselves.

i think it was namaste who posted some incredible pictures of the mayor earlier. was she making fun of him? no. she showed him as he was and it came out incredible. "..this poor man to his current state,"? i would say that tha mayor would probably be more pissed about you pitying him so hardily than he would be about spencer's footage.

i never once heard the mayor talk or interact with anyone. having that footage on there gave me a new respect for him and his life and for what we now miss during out trips to the red..
and great loves will one day have to part -smashing pumpkins

Holy crap Lurkist. If you knew the Mayor at all you would have known that he prefered where he was and being drunk to your idea of what his life should be like.
I've seen it all over the country, not just Slade. I talked with him a week before he died.He told me he stayed drunk that whole summer, with a grin on his face. It meant he made a bit more money than usual. Lighten up.You arent going to save the world from itself.

So, we have a 22 year old punk who could not begin to understand or appreciate the societal ills and dynamic that have brought this poor man to his current state.....
You think his unique life and personality is any less valid because of the supposed likeness to a cultural stereotype?

He was who he was, sorry if it embarrasses you.

When I saw the mayor in the video, and any other time in the red, I saw a beautiful person. . . A REAL and beautiful person. Thanks Spencer for showing more than just climbing, ... thanks for showing the many facets of the culture within the gorge.

The issue is not who Tucker was or what anyone thought of him or what anyone thought he should be. The issue is the use of him in the video as a stooge.
Yes, he might not like it that I run to his defense.
I did not attempt to help him while he lived and if he lived now, I would still live and let live.
The issue is the with the climbing comunity and its seeming lack of sensitivity to local residents.
Show the video to Stella. Show it to Robert Stamper (who happens to be the President of Beattyville Chamber of Commerce). Show it to Rita Wehner in the FS offices. Show it to Edna at the Trading Post. Ask them what they think of how the local residents of Slade are portrayed.
I am not going to save the world from itself, but neither am I going to be associated with a group of people who think it is okay to publically humiliate people who have found themselves at the bottom of the societal heap.
This video is not too far removed from a bunch of guys stomping a drunk.

It puzzles me that a few people posting here sincerely believe that this was not Spencer's intention, when indeed it clearly was.

Lurkist, I believe that most of our climbing friends and local community friends would agree with your position. (And, most would have better sense than to jump into the fray here as I've just done. ) But, there is a small hard core group of contributors to this forum who get their kicks by shocking our pants off with their Bevis and Butthead sense of morality and their proclaimations that vulgarity is hilarity. Ironically, and as you well know, these posters are, in real life, some of the nicest folks you will meet anywhere. But, give 'em a keyboard, and Dr. Jekyl becomes Mr. Hyde.

One thing for sure, they do get our juices flowing!

I can't wait to actually see the video, not the least because I never met the Mayor and I'm interested in hearing him speak - but I will go into watching that 'with a grain of salt.'

That said, is it possible that both sides of this are right? Is it possible that Spencer put in the interview(s) as comic relief: let's laugh at the hick locals, and at the same time, he managed to present the Mayor just being himself - presenting a man most of us would otherwise never have known at all?

Spencer's intent was not to stomp on anyone, and it would be a shame if the elements of the video he meant to set it apart and give you a feel for the Red (as more than just a climbing area-- as a home and place of business for some) ended up getting it black-listed.
