Buy a new car - Honda or Toyota. Do that and you rarely need a mechanic.
Oh and I fear neither.

Learn how to fix it yourself. It's really not that hard most of the time.
If you take get a good fast drill and some epoxy you can do your own fillings.

i enjoy working on my cars when i have time and always do for easy stuff like fluid changes. i change oil every month 3 cars a month. keeps repair bills down. last few years i've been too busy and have to send them in to the shop for more and more. it's jus good 'ol redneck fun to be under the hood sometimes though. makes me grateful for a clean-hands profession too.

I had a recent round of dental work done-root canal/cap, filling, cleaning. Did it all without anesthesia, no problem - just a little twinge here or there - you can't exactly grit your teeth, but it was bearable. The only two painful parts of it were the cleaning (my dentist is a pretty strong guy, and he was scraping and flossing like it was he was trying to get a serioius workout in) and, of course, the bill.....
As for mechanics - I'm a fan of the Honda/Toyota mechanic avoidance route!

Vicadin gives me non-stop hiccups. It's better than the pain of an exposed nerve but not much.

Well, my car is STILL in the shop. I've been in a rental for 7 weeks now. Nice.
