wait...
is the statement that
a/b/c AND d are not mutally exclusive. meaning that a/b/c are equivalents?
or is he saying that a, b, c, d are not mutually exclusive?

Actually, I think you're all reading it wrong. I think he's saying that "Training/projecting/climbing hard and having fun" are not involved in an orgy with "MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE". Read it again and feel the enlightenment.

Okay, let's say it this way: you can find joy and fun in training hard or projecting or climbing hard.

Easy is a relevant term. Your easy maybe my hard.

Maybe it means that people who train hard to achieve climbing goals are, in fact, having fun even though it maybe viewed as climbing for the numbers.

It is funny, how, whenever someone talks about wanting to climb hard, everybody else comes in and is like 'hey man, don't forget, its about fun...'

I think improving is fun.

Mutually Exclusive....

adj 1: unable to be both true at the same time [syn: contradictory] 2: necessitating a choice between mutually exclusive possibilities; "`either' and `or' in `either this or that'" [syn: alternative]

Yeah, some people definitely have fun training. It's not really my style but it doesn't mean it ain't right for someone else. In Boone a few weeks ago a guy gave me the greatest quote but he couldn't remember the source.....
I'd rather climb 5.12 with a hangover than 5.14 with an eating disorder.

In essence, this quote
I'd rather climb 5.12 with a hangover than 5.14 with an eating disorder.
Is expressing the oppinion that it is not possible to climb 5.12 with a hangover AND 5.14 with an eating disorder. Thus, he is suggesting that the two ARE mutually exclusive.

But what if you are an anorexic, alcoholic climber? Is it possible for a person like that to climb 5.14?
